Child Nutrition and Development in the SDG Era: Progress, Gaps, and the Challenges of Preventing Stunting and Wasting by 2030

Child nutrition and healthy development are central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 on Zero Hunger and SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being. Despite significant progress in reducing child undernutrition in many regions, stunting and wasting remain major global public health challenges. This paper examines progress, persistent gaps, and emerging challenges in preventing stunting and wasting by 2030. It highlights the importance of adequate maternal nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding, appropriate complementary feeding, micronutrient supplementation, immunization, sanitation, and access to quality healthcare in improving child growth and development. Although several countries have achieved reductions in stunting, progress remains uneven, while wasting continues to affect millions of children, especially in low- and middle-income countries and conflict-affected settings. Poverty, food insecurity, climate change, infectious diseases, inadequate health services, and socioeconomic inequalities further undermine nutritional outcomes. The paper argues that achieving the 2030 targets requires integrated, evidence-based, and context-specific interventions supported by stronger health and nutrition systems. Greater investment in early childhood, social protection, community-based programs, and reliable nutrition data is essential. Accelerating multisectoral action, strengthening accountability, and prioritizing vulnerable populations can help close existing gaps and ensure that every child has the opportunity to survive, grow, and reach their full developmental potential.
